Porsche 911 GT3 RS (991.1) Long-Term Ownership Review

By Stuart Ellis · 25 September 2025 · 13 min video

My 2016 991.1 GT3 RS in Lava Orange was a dream car. After long-term ownership on the road and on track, here's what living with an RS really teaches you.

The verdict

Raw and uncompromising, yet civil enough to drive daily. On track it gives you superhero levels of driving confidence; on the road the steering is almost telepathic. It's an economical track toy once you're past the entry price, values hold well, and it still turns my head every time I walk up to it.

What I liked

  • The 360mm buttonless steering wheel, the best I've ever used
  • Electric steering you'd swear is hydraulic
  • PASM soft mode is civilised; Sport+ is firm but never crashy
  • Useful front boot (the 992 RS loses it)

What I didn't

  • Ceramic brakes cost about A$40,000 to replace
  • The magnesium roof heats the cabin in the Aussie sun
  • No reverse camera or sensors from the factory
  • Standard speakers are poor

FAQ

Is a 991 GT3 RS expensive to run on track?

Less than you'd think. I swapped the ceramics for steel discs for track days and found Nankang CR-S tyres quicker, longer-lasting and cheaper than Cup 2s for my use.

Does a GT3 RS hold its value?

In my experience, yes. You can basically get your money back.

Is the Porsche extended warranty worth it?

For a GT car, I think it's a no-brainer. In Australia it's available up to 15 years from first registration.
