Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: 1,000km Road Trip, Then the Track

By Stuart Ellis · 22 January 2026 · 32 min video

I've owned my Ioniq 5 N for about two years. I drove it roughly 1,000km down the Pacific Highway to a Hyundai owners' track night at Sydney Motorsport Park, using only the car's own navigation.

The verdict

The Ioniq 5 N is a comfortable, blisteringly fast tourer, and on track it's laugh-out-loud fun despite its 2.2 tonnes. Range is its Achilles heel, and long trips need planning, but how engaging it is makes up for the charging stops. Too many people write off EVs over a road-trip use case most of us rarely face.

What I liked

  • Relaxed, compliant and quiet in Eco
  • Great seats: no aches after a full day
  • Digital rear-view mirror and a capable highway driving assist
  • Playful and confident on track

What I didn't

  • Range: it's not built as a long-haul cruiser
  • One fast charger needed an app and phone reception, with no tap-to-pay
  • Hard track use meant new tyres and an alignment on the way home

FAQ

Can you road trip an Ioniq 5 N?

Yes, but plan your charging. Brisbane to Sydney took just under three hours of charging; with better planning, two stops and about two hours would do it.

How much did it cost to charge Brisbane to Sydney?

About A$132 for 175.7kWh across three public chargers.

Is the Ioniq 5 N good on track?

It's hyper-hatch fast, playful and confidence-inspiring, but hard track use is tough on tyres.

Any road-trip charging tips?

Start looking for chargers earlier than you think, check each charger's speed, and consider an app like PlugShare.
